The Beerman & Sons Seeding Process
We follow a meticulous process to ensure the best results for your new lawn:
- Soil Testing: Weeks before the project begins, we take soil samples for testing to determine nutrient deficiencies and plan necessary amendments.
- Site Preparation:
- Remove existing grass and weeds using a sod cutter and dispose of any other debris, and unwanted landscape features.
- If the sub soil is extremely poor and compacted, we utilize a Harley Rake (click to view video) to create an optimal environment for root growth.
- Grade the area and add approximately 2 inches of topsoil enriched with compost for added organic matter.
- A water-filled barrel roller is used to create a firm, smooth surface, ensuring excellent seed-to-soil contact.
- Seeding Application:
- Apply seed using either a broadcast spreader or a mechanical slit seeder.
- Slit seeding is preferred as it places seeds directly into the soil, ensuring better germination rates.
- Straw Tackifier Application: A straw tackifier is spread over the seed to retain moisture and protect the seeds during germination.
- Final Compaction: The area is rolled again to ensure the seed is firmly in place and the soil is smooth.
