A lot of homeowners get stuck in the deck vs. patio debate. Which one gives you more space? Which one looks better? Which one works with your yard? Here's the thing - it doesn't have to be either-or. This Voorhees backyard is a perfect example of what's possible when you stop choosing and start combining.
Here's what we were working with: an older wood deck that was doing the job but not much else. No patio space below it, no defined areas for entertaining, and really no reason to spend time out there beyond the basics. The homeowners wanted more - a backyard that actually worked as a living space. So we teamed up with Jim DiMarco from Decked Out Construction and got to work. Jim handled the new deck. We handled everything around it - the raised paver patio, the curved seating wall, the planting beds, and the low-voltage landscape lighting throughout.
The paver patio sits just off the deck at grade level, giving the space a connected but layered feel. The curved block seating wall wraps the patio in a clean half-circle, keeping it visually grounded and giving people a place to sit without dragging out extra chairs. The two-toned paver layout adds some texture without being overdone. And the white railing with black balusters on the deck ties the whole thing together without competing with the hardscape below.
Then there's the nighttime view. The low-voltage lighting built into the seating wall and stair risers does a lot of heavy lifting after dark. It's warm, it's layered, and it makes the space feel finished in a way that daytime photos can't fully capture. That's one of the things we always push for on projects like this - design it so it looks just as good at 9 PM as it does at noon.
What made this work is the coordination. When you've got a deck contractor and a hardscape and lighting crew working from the same plan, the details line up. The steps connect cleanly, the lighting hits the right spots, and nothing looks like it was added as an afterthought. If you've got an existing deck that needs something built around it - or you're starting from scratch - that's exactly the kind of project we can help you design and execute from start to finish.
